I used 2 boxed cake mixes (chocolate, of course!) and baked my cakes in 2 batches using an 8" square pan and a loaf pan (about 4 1/4" x 8 1/2"). So for the first batch, I split one box of cake batter evenly between the two pans. Repeat for second cake mix. (*HINT: use wet Wilton bake-even strips or simply an old bath towel cut into strips and pinned along the outside of the pan to make the cake bake more levelly. This will reduce the amount of loss from leveling them off.)

Since the loaf pan's sides are not straight (perpendicular to the base) like my square pan, it creates a natural bevel without having to carve it with a knife and deal with frosting the delicate cut surfaces.
For the cab part, I cut up an 8" square cake. After baked, it measured approximately 7 3/4" so I cut one strip about wide enough to fit the top of body (about 4"), then cut that exactly in half (so I had two "squares" about 4" by 3 3/4"). The rest of that cake will be extra for snacking!
This seemed to be a good size so the cab was somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 the length of the body.
For the treads, I used the second 8" cake. Dimensions per tread were as follows: A= 1/2" B= 7 3/4" (uncut side of 8" cake which baked down do this size) C= 1 1/2" (The height will seem small but after the Kit-Kats are added above and beneath it, it will add an entire 1" to the height).

*Note: My treads were only about 1" wide (the height of the leveled 8" cake) so you will have to push the kit kats into the cake a bit so they don't stick out further than the cake.
I used about 2 full bags of the kit kat miniatures.
Use two kit kats for the lights and something for the exhaust pipe (we used a black pen with the ink tube removed- it was even hollow like a pipe!). I used a full regular sized Hershey bar for the blade. Crumble up some of the extra cake (if you used chocolate) and pile it up in front of the blade on some frosting.
Viola! A fun construction cake for your little boy (or whoever!). My little guy's name is Beau, so I wrote "Beau-dozer" on the blade! :) It's been a month since his birthday, and he still talks about his bulldozer cake- it was quite a hit!

My son will be 2 in two weeks and I have been trying to figure out the cuts and what size pans to bake the cake in, etc, so I can make it for him for his birthday. ReplyDeleteFor the two loaf cakes, are you supposed to sit them side by side? Then for the cab part, are you stacking the 2 square cakes on the back portion of the body of the truck? Did you freeze the cakes before cutting them? I really want to make this cake for my son's 3rd birthday in a few weeks. I hope it comes out as well as yours did!!
ReplyDeleteAlison, the loaf cakes are stacked on top of each other (the first diagram is an attempt to show this). After you level off the tops of the loaf cakes, put them together with the leveled sides together. The cab portion is cut out of one of the square cakes to fit onto the body. It ends up being two smaller squares stacked, about 4"x4" each. The exact dimensions are above the 2nd diagram. It should make more sense on how to assemble it when all the cake pieces are laid out in front of you. I didn't freeze my cakes but some people do prefer to do it that way. I made this for my son's 3rd b-day too! He still talks about it! Good luck, you're son is one lucky little guy!

ReplyDeleteErica, assemble the cake using icing to glue pieces together then gently frost the whole thing with thin consistency icing (I just stir up a can of store bought for thin consistency). That will help seal in any crumbs. I used a standard star tip for the yellow and a slightly smaller sized star for the black windows in medium consistency (I add powdered sugar to the store bought icing to make it thicker for this). DeleteAs far as technique, just check out youtube (wilton has good videos) and then practice on a plate or something first, but the star tip is pretty easy to use! I used a small round tip for the window outlines, tread details, and lettering (also with medium consistency frosting). You might want to at least mark out the windows very first so it doesn't get covered up with the yellow. If there are any little gaps in the star tipped design, you can always go back and fill it in with a smaller star. Just give it a try and have fun with it! Your son will love it!

DeleteI was lazy, so I bought a can of frosting. Although, since I piped it on with the star tip, I added powdered sugar to it to make it thicker and help it keep its shape. I don't know an exact amount I added per can, but you want it about "medium consistency." ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I first piped the borders of the windows in black with a small round tip then filled it in with a slightly smaller star than what I did the yellow with. The sides of the treads are not actually even black (I wanted it to blend in with the brown kit kats better). I just got some chocolate fudge frosting in the can (because it was darker than the milk chocolate) and spread it on with a small spatula, then did the yellow details with a small round tip over that. DeleteAny idea how many this cake would serve? Getting ready to do it for my son's 3rd birthday. It looks decent size on your son's lap, but it may be because he's 3 :) I need it to serve about 25. I made an army tank once that in my mind appears much smaller than this and I think we got about 15-20 average size pieces out of it, so the size of this may be ok! I really appreciate the good instructions. We'll see how it goes!
ReplyDeleteI would guess about 15 good-size servings. Even though you'll use two cake mixes, there is quite a bit extra after cutting out the cake pieces. I would definitely bake some extra cupcakes to have around for a crowd that size! Happy bday to your boy!

Since the treads are separate pieces from the main cake, I iced the main portion first, laid down a row of kit kats for the bottoms, then set the treads on top, frosted them, and stuck on the kit kats for the tops.

I couldn't find mini kit kats so just trimmed down the original ones and used melted dark chocolate for smoothing out the treads and dark chocolate bars for windows as my chocolate icing was dark enough.

ReplyDeleteI decide to try this using fondant icing. I had quite a few people coming so I had to increase the size and didn't do the bottom row of Kit Kat's.
This is the first time with fondant icing so a few things to learn but it looked OK I think and tasted good.
Wow! Would love to see a pic! Fondant is still very intimidating to me!

I realize I'm getting back to you possibly too late, but I use Wilton food colors. It's a gel-like coloring that lets you tint the icing very brightly without thinning it out like traditional colorings.

ReplyDeleteI generally do use the wilton gel colors. I don't remember what I did in this instance, but I know one trick for black icing is to start with chocolate icing instead of plain buttercream and add the black coloring to that. Hope it helps!
